What To Bring
ACTORS
If you’re new to the acting industry, two looks is what you need. That’s a theatrical look and a commercial look. But that means you probably need to bring at least three or four outfits with you! It’s always best to have options.
We advise you to avoid bold patterns. It’s best to keep it simple, as we’re trying to draw attention to you not your shirt. So bright colours, which lend themselves to commercial looks, and dark rich tones and interesting textures, which get the attention of the theatric folks, are definitely the way to go!
– most people want to enhance and bring focus to their eyes, so bring colors to suit.
– layers like jackets, vests and scarves add context and texture to a shot.
– make sure clothes are clean and free of wrinkles.
Whilst the lighting, angle and confidence in your eyes are the main components of a great head shot, texture can help someone feel like they are there with you, whilst a bold color can make the picture pop and get their attention. The smooth shine of a leather jacket, or the softness of a wool sweater can trigger all kinds of positive familiar memories in the mind of the person viewing the photo. Put yourself in the shoes of an agent/casting director… Can you imagine just how many photos they see?! ……Well, to help you on your way in every Session we try to shoot something thats pretty simple and a strong safe bet, and to shoot something that’s a little bolder, that’ll catch them a little off guard and stand you out from the crowd.
To research further, don’t worry about digging through online guides…..just watch some TV! Look at the colors and cuts of the clothing worn in recent shows across all the networks & streaming services, and find styles that you feel suit you. Look at what the character you dream of playing is wearing and bring something along that reminds you of it.
So the bottom line is: If you’re not quite sure what to bring… just bring everything. Iron your favorites and please fold them nicely enough to make your mom proud……then shove all the rest in a bag and bring it! You’d be surprised how often that little chance after thought of an outfit is the one you end up liking the most when you see the wonderful results.
BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS
If this is a corporate headshot session, we usually suggest two looks, but do bring yourself several options! Yes we’ll happily shoot something nice and simple like a dark jacket and light shirt, but don’t be afraid to also bring some bold accessories with you too……especially if they are in keeping with your company colors and promotional marketing material.
After a long long time languishing as dressed-up versions of high school portraits, business headshots are being dragged into the twenty-first century by the force of social media. This is very much reflective of the way business practices have evolved in recent years. Living in an economy built on the strength of ideas and with people putting their expertise out there on platforms like LinkedIn more people than ever now need a professional headshot…..just look at the number of guys who no longer feel forced to wear a tie.
Now the tie is an option, and you have the option to get a bit creative with your headshot. So bring along any favorite outfit you’ve ever worn in a work setting and felt at your best in.
If you’re not quite sure what to bring, just bring everything! We’ll help pick out what will work best.
